Hey there, I'm Nandina Nana! I'm not too fussy about my growing conditions, I am pretty easy to maintain. Just give me a little attention and I'll provide rewarding results (my dazzling red and green colors are divine!!)
Difficulty: easy, little attention will bring rewarding results
Light Needed: moderate, full sun to partial shade
Water: easy, not much water needed
This plant is comprised of beautiful shades of red and green. It is a shrub that is relatively easy to take care of and maintain. The more light, the more red it will be and the more shade, the more green it will be. It might even bloom fragrant white flowers in the summer or bright, scarlet berries until April!
Size: Medium (6”)
Where I’m From:
Botanical Name: Nandina domestica ‘Nana Purpurea
Nicknames: Nandina Nana, Heavenly Bamboo, Dwarf Sacred Bamboo, Dwarf Heavanly Bamboo
Favorite Hangout Spots: Rooms that get some sun during the day: kitchen, bedroom, living room.
A sunny location is best where the plant can receive full sun during the day with some afternoon shade. Colors stand out better in the sun.
Drought tolerating and does not need much water. Water about every 14-21 days. If you see the plant dropping leaves, this means too much water.
Not picky about temperature, both frost and drought tolerant.
Normal humidity is fine, nothing specific.
Grows moderately fast on it's own, up to 8ft in size. A balanced fertilizer once in early spring can promote growth of flowers in the summer.
Keep away from pets! May cause weakness, incoordination, seizures, coma, respiratory failure, or death (rare).
In Japan, this plant symbolizes clean air and the gift of purification.
